PSHE is taught at Selby Community Primary School to ensure that our children have the necessary life skills to ensure they are able to have a positive impact on themselves, their relationships and in the wider society.

Anne Frank once wrote ‘The final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands’.

We must ensure that children have the knowledge and skills that enable them to flourish in the 21st Century.

Our aims for PSHE at Selby Community Primary School are:

  • All pupils will develop an accurate, balanced and relevant knowledge around the key themes.
  • All pupils will have the opportunity to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge, their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities.
  • All pupils will develop the skills, language and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.
  • All pupils will have the opportunities to develop positive personal attributes such as resilience, self-confidence, self-esteem and empathy.

We are committed to offering all children a planned, developmental programme of learning, providing opportunities and contexts for children to practise applying and embedding new knowledge so that it can be used skillfully and confidently in real life situations.

Our expectations for what should be achieved by the end of each year group are divided into four key areas:

  • Relationships
  • Health & well being (both physical and mental)
  • Me & my future (incorporating financial well being & aspiration)
  • Keeping myself self

We also believe that children should be provided with the opportunity to exceed these expectations and demonstrate ‘Mastery’ of these concepts where they are able. At Selby CP, we consider ‘Mastery’ to be the ability to communicate and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future.
